Journal Article · · Physical Review (U.S.) Superseded in part by Phys. Rev. A, Phys. Rev. B: Solid State, Phys. Rev. C, and Phys. Rev. D
Absolute cross sections for the N/sup 14/(d,n)O/sup 15/ and reactions were measured at zero degrees to Mev bombarding energy. Both excitation curves show strong resonance structure and have maximum cross sections tions weree measured for the N/sup 15/(d,n)O/sup 16/ reaction at (auth) d was excited measured yield. in the giant resonance region with half-width not greater than 2 Mev. The isomeric level excitation efficiency, sigma ( gamma ,n gamma ')/ sigma ( gamma ,n) was calculated: it reaches a maximum value of 5%, which may be compared with the same quantity relative to inelastic neutron scattering in Pb/ sup 207/, that already at the energy of 11 Mev, in the compound system, assumes a 14% walue. A discussion is given to explain the complete disagreement between the above two values of the excitation efficiency, which is attributed to the difference in angular momentum transferred to the compound system in the above two reactions.
