INVERSE PHOTONUCLEAR REACTIONS N$sup 14$(p,$gamma$)O$sup 15$ AND N$sup 15$(p,$gamma$)O$sup 16$ IN THE REGION OF THE GIANT RESONANCE
The 90 deg yield of gamma rays to the O/sup 15/ ground state from the N/sup 14/(p, gamma )O/sup 15/ reaction was measured for proton energies between 12 and 19.5 Mev, covering the region of excitation in O/sup 15/ between 18 and 25 Mev. The excitation curve was quite flat (with d sigma /d OMEGA at 90 deg approx equal 16 mu b/4 pi sr), and showed little evidence of the giant resonance. The results for O/sup 15/ were compared to those for N/sup 15/ obtained by Jacobs and Stephens by meams of the N/sup 15/( gamma ,p)C/sup 14/ reaction. The 90 deg yield of gamma rays to the O/sup 16/ ground state from the N/sup 15/(p, gamma )O/sup 16/ >s reaction was measured for proton energies between 10 and 15 Mev, corresponding to O/sup 16/ excitation energies between 21 and 16 Mev. The excitation curve showed two large resonances peaked at 21.8 and 24.7 Mev with integral total cross sections of about 0.27 Mev-mb each if no background was assumed. The O/sup 16/ results were compared with theoretical calculations of Elliott and Flowers, and of otbers. (auth)
