Hf$sup 183$-A NEW ISOTOPE OF HAFNIUM

Neutron bombardment of W produces a half life of 64 plus or minus 3 minutes in the hafnium fraction. The maximum BETA /sup -/ energy of this nuclide is about 1.4 Mev, and its total disintegration energy Q(B/sup -/ is about 2.2 Mev. This value agrees with the predicted Q(B/sup -/) value for Hf/sup 183/. The mass number is corfirmed by the amount of radioactive Ta/sup 183/ formed after decay of the hafnium. The reported 10-minute haif life for Ta/sup 186/ is confirmed. (auth)
