THE EFFECTS OF PROTON AND NEUTRON IRRADIATIONS ON AN EPOXY RESIN VACUUM CHAMBER PROPOSED FOR THE HARWELL 7 GEV PROTON SYNCHROTRON

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4250873
Proton 0rradiation within an epoxy resin vacuum ehamber, proposed for the Harwell 7 Bev proton synchrotrons is esiimated at energies where it is expected to be most intense. Large dose proton and neutron irradiation experiments are described and the results discussed in the light of theoretical information on the distribution of the proton beam during extraction from the machine. The conclusion reached is that such materials as those examined are susceptible to serious loss of strength due to radiation damage thus rendering them unsuitable for use in a highly stressed structure.
