THE BETA DECAY OF K$sup 4$$sup 0$

Journal Article · · Nuclear Phys.
The beta decay of K/sup 40/ was studied using a l inch diameter x l inch high K((Tl) scintillation crystal. The Curie plot of the beta spectrum was made linear down to less than 200 kev by the use of the exact third forbidden correction factor. The uncertainty in the correction for electron escape is suggested as the main source of nonlinearity below this energy. The extrapolated end point energy was 1.35 plus or minus 0.02 Mev. A specific activity of 27.2 plus or minus 0.5 betas per second per g of natural potassium was obtained. This corresponds to a decay constant lambda ( BETA ) = (4.72 plus or minus 0.09) x 10/ sup -10/y/sup -1/ and a half-life t( BETA ) = (l.47 plus or minus 0.03) x 10/ sup 9/y. (auth)
