An investigation was made to show ihe effect of pH on the sensitivity of nuclear emulsions and the extent to which the pH effect could be reversed. The pH limits in which reversible and irreversible variations of the sensitivity are caused were established. The use of an impregnating solution with pH less than 3 causes a strong decrease of the sensitivity (50 to 100%) which is reversible to a large extent. For pH > 8, a reversible increase of the sensitivity was found at the same time as an irreversible decrease of the sensitivity. The reversible effect was attributed to the effect of the double layer of space charges formed on the crystal interface on the formation of the latent image. The irreversible effect was produced by ion impurities diffusing in the crystal and the effect of these ions on the centers of sensitivity. (tr-auth)
