The effect of concentrated solutions of various uranium salts in the interval from pUO/sub 2/ = 0.097 STA(UO/sub 2/(NO/sub 3/)/sub 2/i - 6H/sub 2/O) 20%! to pUO/sub 2/ = 3.75 STA(5.4 UO2/sup (//sub 3/)/sub 2/ - 6H/sub 2/O) 10->s/ sup 4/%! on io nographic emulsions was studied in the case where the pH of the solutions was previously reduced to a value in the interval pH 6 to7. This study presents a practical interest since, in order to study the processes of uranium fission and of some of its nuclear reactions by means of the photographic method, it is necessary to introduce in the photographic emulsion a quantity of uranium salt. The work also has a theoretical interest dealing with the problem of the influence of strange ions introduced in large quantities in the emulsion on the efficiency of the formation of the latent image. In the method employed, the effect of the concentration of the UO/sub 2/ ions on the intensity of the development was avoided by prolonged washing of the plate in cold water before the development operation. It was shown that the solution of uranyl nitrate neutralized (pH 6.2) with a concentration of uranyl ions less than 0.2 N (5% UO/ sub 2/NO/sub 3/)/sub 2/ - 6H/sub 2/O) does not affect in a significant fashion the sensitivity of ionographic emulsions. The solutions of uranyl nitrate neutralized with a concentration of uranyl ions higher than 0.2 N desensitizes the emulsions. The effect of desensitization is partially reversible, which is easily explainable by supposing that the effect is caused by the effect of the double electric layer of the ions of the solution, adsorbed on the crystal surface or in the dibuse layer.
