MEAN LIFE OF THE FIRST EXCITED STATE OF Na$sup 2$$sup 3$

Journal Article · · Nuclear Phys.
The nuclear resonant scattering by sodium of the 440 kev gamma radiation from Na/sup 23/ (p,p') was investigated. From the self-absorption of the resonance radiation the mean life of the first excited state of Na/sup 23/3 is found to be 1.8 x 10/sup-12 sec. The E2 partial life of this level was previously measured by Coulomb excitation, and the E2/M1 amplitude ratio sigma is then 0.056. The theoretical ratio of 151 to 115 deg nuclear resonant scattering is either 1.06 or 1.20, depending on whether sigma is positive or negative. The experimental ratio is 1.10 plus or minus 0.04, suggesting that sigma is positive. (auth)
