$gamma$-IRRADIATION OF POLYVINYL CHLORIDE IN WATER

Journal Article · · Sci. Papers Inst. Phys. Chem. Research (Tokyo)
OSTI ID:4232775

Polyvinyl chloride was irradiated in water by gamma rays from cobalt-60, and the results of measurements of its viscosity are compared with those obtained by irradiation in air and vacuum. Measurements on melting temperature and gel formation were also carried out. It is shown that cross-linked polymers resulted by the absorption of a comparatively small dose in water. Chemical analysis carried out on the irradiated samples revealed G-value of about 25 for the evolution of chlorine atoms when irradiated in water, which may be compared with the value of 5.4 obtained for the irradiation in air by electrons. The results cannot be explained by the simple exclusion of oxygen by the surrounding water but may be interpreted as showing the existence of indirect actions from the water which is promoting crosslinking.
