FISSION OF U$sup 238$ INDUCED BY $mu$$sup -$ CAPTURE

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Letters
It has been pointed out that there are two ways in which a f UO/sub 2/ - meson stopped in uranium may induce nuclear fission. The energy released in the nonradiative transition of the mesonic atom to its is state as well as that liberated in the nuclear-capture process, f UO/sub 2/ /sup -/ + U/sup 238/ sintered BeO Pa/sup 238/ + , should be sufficient sometimes to induce fission. The preliminary results of an experiment performed to obtuin the relative probabilities of the two meson-induced fission mechanisms are presented. The experimental setup is described. (W.D.M.)
