The effects of gamma and x radiation on the excitability and conductivity of the sciatic nerve of the frog were studied for doses up to 80,000 r and an attempt made to correlate results with muscular response. Either the whole nerve or a short segment was irradiated. Excitability and conduction velocity of the nerve and the response of the attached gastrocnemius muscle were recorded both during and after irradiation. Observations were also made of the mechanical activity of the nerves. No stimulation of the nerves by irradiation was observed, but complex and paradoxical effects on the excitability of non- irradiated segments were found. Finally, data are presented graphically and experimental procedures and results are described.
