Nerve-muscle (gastrocnemius) preparations in 53 frogs were locally x- irradiated (10 kR). Irradiation in the region of the electrodes used for stimulating the preparation resulted in increased excitability. With repeated irradiation, an increase in the threshold of muscle contraction was observed after each irradiation. Cutting of the sympathetic nerves on one side, the intact side acting as a control, did not change the effect of the irradiation. This indicates that the somatic system is the one affected. It is assumed that the radiation affects the nerve endings in the muscles. (TTT)
