BS>In order to study the behavior of spark counters with various filling gases with respect to fast neutrons, a series of spark counters was constructed. Two constructions are described. It is shown that there are spark counters with and without steady current. The properties of both these groups were investigated. With a methane-filled 10-filament counter, a response of 0.25% was obthined for fast neutrons from a Po--Be source. The discrimination ratio between neutrons and gamma quanta is therefore 1:5 x 10/sup 3/. These counters have a marked directional dependence. (tr-auth)
