For the detection of H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ formed by x rays in aqueous solution two enzyme systems have been used: a) livercatalase and C/sup 14/ labeled formate, C/sup 14/O/sup 2/ being the reaction product; b) horseradish- peroxidase and 0-dianisidine, the oxidation of which can be followed colorimetrically. Liver-catalase and horseradish-peroxidase are resistant enough to yield amounts of reaction products directly proportional to the x-ray dose up to 15,000 r. The influence of experimental conditions and of inhibitors on the enzymatic component in radiation induced formate oxidation has been investigated and is discussed in view of the biological role of catalase.
