Results are presented of investigation on the polarization of recoil protons appearing in elastic pi /sup +/-p scattering through an angle of 140 plus or minus 8 deg in the cms at an energy of 307 plus or minus 5 Mev. A polarization value P/sub 1/ = --0.19 plus or minus 0.17 was derived from the data on the magnitude of the left-right asymmetry in elastic scattering of recoil protons on nuclei of the photographic emulsion. Phase shifts satisfying the indicated polarization value and consistent with the differential cross section for elastic scattering of pi /sup +/ -mesons by protons are given. Problems connected with the use of various phase shift sets for analysis of the experimental data are discussed. (auth)
