Thermodynamic studies carried out by two types of chlorination, Me/sub 2/ O/sub n/ (t) + (n/2)C(t) + nCl/sub 2/ = 2MeCl/sub n/ (mel t) + (n/2)CO/sub 2/(g), where the oxide in the melt does not react with the metal chloride in the melt, and Me/sub 2/O/sub n/ (t) + (n-2/2)C (t) + (n-2)Cl/sub 2/(g) = 2MeOCl/sub (n-2)/ (t) + (n-2/2)CO/sub 2/ (g), where the oxide and chloride form oxychlorides insoluble in the melt. The experiments show that the method of electromotive forces is appllcable to studies of thermodynamic chlorination resulting in oxychlorides. The results are in good agreement with published thermodynamic oxychloride constants, but differ from the entropy values. This is probably the result of the structure of uranium oxychloride. (R.V.J.)
