Studies of niobium oxychloride reaction with alkali chlorides showed that at atmospheric pressure and 150 to 500 deg C temperature niobium oxychlorides do not react with NaCl. Niobium oxychlorides react with K, Rb, and Cs chlorides forming pentachlorooxyniobates Me/sub 2/NbOCl/sub 5/ and tetrachlorooxyniobates MeNbOCl/sub 4/ where Me is K, Rb, and Cs cations with melting points 500, 570, and 640 deg C, respectively. Melt disgrams were constructed for KCl-NbOCl/sub 3/ and CsCl--NbOCl/sub 3/. The vapor pressure of NbOCl/sub 3/ over pentachlorooxyniobates was studied as a function of temperature. It is shown that the stability decreases with the ion radius of compounds Cs/sub 2/NbOCl/sub 5/ > Rb/sub 2/NbOCl/sub 5/ > K/sub 2/NbOCl/sub 5/. Certain thermodynamic functions of pentachlorooxyniobates andd tetrachlorooxyniobates were determined. (R.V.J.)
