A method for refining and separating Ti, Zr, Ce, Hf, and Th is given which involves distillation of carbonyl complexes. Powdered Ti, for example, is agitated and heated in a vessel to 400 ction prod- C at a pressure of 4 to 8 atm. of a rare gas and enough CO to react to form liquid Ti(CO)/sub 7/. This liquid is vaporized and led to a precipitation chamber where re-heating decomposes the carbonyl complex leaving pure metal. (T.R.H.)
