A method is given for producing graphite which is relatively impermeable to fluids. The graphite is exposed to nickel carbonyl in H/sub 2/ at 200 to 500 ction prod- C to deposit Ni on the surface. A heat treatment at 1200 to 1400 ction prod- C stabilizes the coating. (T.R.H.)
