A method of preparing pure Ti from oxides and oxide ores, and apparatus for carrying out the procedure is described. The process involves reaction with HF to TiF/sub 4/ which reacts with Si to prcduce SiF/sub 4/ and Ti. The SiF/sub 4/ can be reacted with H/sub 2/0 to generate HF for recycling. The first step is carried out in a separate heated vessel batch-wise. A larger vessel is used for the reaction with Si. The TiF/sub 4/ is liquid and the Si is finely divided solid. This second reaction should take place at about 1 atm and -600 to 700 deg F. The upper portion of the vessel is lacketed to condense sublimed TiF/sub 4/. (T.R.H.)
