OCULAR THERAPY WITH BETA PARTICLES
Beta radiation ophthalmic applicators, especially those with radioactive Sr/sup 90/, provide a ready source of radiotherapy for superficial lesions of the eye. A survey of 694 beta-radiated eyes is reported. The results of this survey indicate that these beta particles produce effects on ocular tissue which are more or less predictable in incidence and latency. These effects, both the desirable and the undesirable ones, are discussed and attempts are made to define the latent period, dose of production, incidence, and clinical course of these effects. This type of therapy is effective in treating corneal vascularization, especially that occurring in rosacea keratitis. It is of value as an adjunct to surgical procedures in the treatment of recurrent pterygiums. It is especially indicated in limbal tumors with or without associated surgical excision. It seems to have some use in inflammation and allergic conditions of the cornea and also in certain lid conditions. lt is assoctated with complications such as lens opacities, postradiation vessels, interference with wound healing, and others.
