METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR NUCLEAR REACTOR SAFETY CONTROL

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4176406
A reactor safety device is described. It consists of a means shaped like a fuel element to inject neutron absorbing fluid into the reactor than an unsafe condition exists. A vessel of BF/sub 3/ under pressure is connected to a lowPressure vessel by a solder plug. A uranium heater melts the solder plug at 221 deg C. In normal reactor operation a thermal resistance pad acts as a heat bypass so that the device is triggered only when the U heater heats up due to increased neutron flux. (T.R.H.)
