ANALYTICAL METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF CARBON IN URANIUM OXIDES
Technical Report

OSTI ID:4176297
Uranium oxides, in the form of powder or pellets, are ignited at 900 deg C in an oxygen stream. Carbon dioxide evolved is isolated by means of a cold trap cooled in liquid oxygen and measured, after expandsion at room temperature, as a gas volume. The method is used mainly for uranium dioxide in the form of powder or pellets, but may be applied to any other oxide of uranium. The method is considered to be free from biss. The precision on a thoroughly homogenized sample is: Mean = 240 ppm plus or minus 20 ppm at 95% Confidence Level. The lower limit of detection on a 5 g sample is 10 ppm carbon. (auth)
