ANALYTICAL METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF CARBON IN VANADIUM METAL

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4086415
Vanadium metal in the form of swarf or powder is ignited at 850 deg C in an oxygen stream. The carbon dioxide evolved is isolated by means of a cold trap cooled in a liquid oxygen and measured, after expansion at room temperature, as a gas volume. The method is applicable to determination of carbon in vanadium metal in the form of swarf, millings, turnings, or powder. The method is considered to be free from bias. For a single determination on a homogeneous sample the precision is plus or minus 30 ppm at the 500 ppm carbon level. The lower limit of detection is 10 ppm carbon. (auth)
