The investigation of BF/sub 3/ proportional neutron counters revealed that by the effect of a strong gamma background the amplitude distribution of impulses produced by neutrons became distorted. The distortion of amplitude distribution in counters of various cathodes was examined as a function of electronic amplification. The results can be explained well by the screening effect of the positive space charge developed around the anode due to external radiation. (auth)
