THE ANGULAR AND ENERGY DISTRIBUTION OF PROTONS FROM Ni$sup 58$ REACTIONS INDUCED BY 14.8 Mev NEUTRONS

Journal Article · · Nuclear Phys.
The angular and energy distributions of protons from the Ni/sup 58/ (n,np)Co/sup 57/ reactions with 14.8 Mev neutrons were measured using a shielded multiplate camera. The results indicate that the Ni/sup 58/(n,p) and redominantly through the the compound nucleus, with a small contribution from the direct interaction of the incident neutrons with protons. A semilog plot of the relative level densities calculated from the energy distribution of the protons fits two straight lines corresponding to Maxwellian distributions with temperatures of about 1.0 Mev for the Ni/sup 58/(n,p) reaction and about 0.5 Mev for the Ni/sup 58(n,p)and Ni/sup 58/(n,np) reactions. The total cross section determined from this data is 440 mb plus or minus 10%. (auth)
