PROTONS AND DEUTERONS FROM Ni$sup 58$ BOMBARDED BY 14.9 MeV NEUTRONS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4028016

Energy spectra and angular distributions were measured for protons emitted from Ni/sup 58/ which was bombarded by 14.9-Mev neutrons. The angular distributions indicate 1 = 0 and 1 = 2 transitions to unresolved levels near the ground state of Co/sup 58/ for the direct interaction contribution. At proton energies below 6 Mev, the distributions are isotropic. Nuclear temperatures of 1.35 plus or minus 0.03 and 0.50 plus or minus 0.03 Mev were found for the reactions (n,p gamma ) + (n,pn) and (n,np), respectively. The total cross section for proton emission is 830 plus or minus 70 mb, with partial cross sections being 430 mb (compound) and 60 mb (direct interaction) for (n,p gamma ) + (n,pn) and 340 mb for (n,np). The total cross section for the (n,d) reaction was measured to be 25 plus or minus 6 mb. The deuteron angular distribution suggests unresolved transitions to the 7/2/sup -/Co/sup 57/ ground state and a new state at approximately 0.5 Mev. The presence of an 1 = 1 transition implies approximately 13% p-wave admixture in the Ni/sup 58/ ground state configuration. (D.J.C.)
