METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR RECOVERING GASEOUS FISSION PRODUCTS FROM REACTOR FUELS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4164900
Gaseous flssion products are continuously removed from nuclear fuel elements by flushing them with an inert gas (He, Ne, Ar), which in gas-cooled reactors may be the same as the coolant gas. Canned fuel elements are provided with an inlet and an outlet for the gas; the fissile material should then be porous, contain channels, or consist of small molded objects. The methcd is particularly useful with gas-cooled reactors having uncanned fuel elements, such as porous molded objects consisting of oxides, nitrides, carbides, or silicides.
