THE EFFECT OF COBALT ON THE PROPERTIES OF CHROMIUM STEELS (in French)

Journal Article · · Mem. sci. rev. met.

Alloys were prepared with the currently used carbon and chromium contents. The effect of low cobalt additions (up to 10 per cent) was studied. By studying specimens heattreated for long periods, using metallographic, x-ray, and carbide extraction methods, the phases present in equilibrium for various temperatures were determined. A number of diagrams show sections with two constant variables (chromium and carbon, or temperature and cobalt, or carbon and cobalt): it is seen that, whereas the influence of the cobalt on the solidus and liquidus and the transformation of the carbides is negligible, the gamma radiation effect of the cobalt becomes more marked as the chromium content is increased. Also studied was the effect of low cobalt additions in some currently used chromium steels with 13. 18. and 27% of chromium. In all the steels studied, the tensile strength is increased by solution treatment or in direct prcportion to the gamma radiation effect of the cobalt. Further, the behavior of these steels is studied as regards temper brittleness at 475 deg C and the formation of the delta phase. The corrosion resistance of the steels was investigated by immersion tests with sulfuric acid and boiling nitric acid and by electrochemical tests. The cobalt is found to have a favorable influence.
