The authors investigate the high-temperature tempering and the consequences of heat on the brittleness, microstructure, and other properties of steel 26KhN3M2FA. The formation of carbides under the influence of temperature is assessed. The purpose of the investigation is to test the possibility of the steel as a candidate material for steam turbine blades. It is found that the brittleness of the steel is due to the formation of carbides during tempering and the accompanying depletion of the solid solutions by chromium, molybdenum, and carbon.
