RADICAL AND MOLECULAR YIELDS IN ACIDIFIED DEUTERIUM OXIDE

Radical and moleoular yields for solutions of ferrous sulfate in 0.8 N sulfuric acid in light and heavy water irradiated by 220 kvp x rays were determined by application of the method of Dainton and Sutton and by direct measurement of G(H/sub 2/) and G(D/sub 2/) in solutions containing small, carefully controlled, concentrations of oxygen. At 20.5 deg C the values for heavy water are: GD= 3-88 plus or minus 0-08, GD = 0.38 plus or minus 0.01, GoD= 3.04 plus or minus 0.11, GD o = 0.77 plus or minus 0.02, and G-D/sub 2/O = 4.61 plus or minus 0.10. The rate constant of the reaction Fe/sup 2+/ + D/ sub 2/O/sub 2/ yields Fe/sup 3+/ + OD/sup -/ + OD in 0.8 N sulfuric acid in D/ sub 2/O was shown to have the Arrhenius parameters E = 10.2 plus or minus 0.5 kcal mole-t, A = l0/sup 8.8 plus or minus 0.4/ 1. mole sec.
