PARAMAGNETIC-RESONANCE SPECTRUM OF GADOLINIUM IN SINGLE CRYSTALS OF THORIUM OXIDE

Journal Article · · Phys. and Chem. Solids
The paramagnetic-resonance spectrum of single crystals of ThO/sub 2/ containing less than 0.01 mole % of Gd/sup 3+/ has been analyzed at 290 and 90 deg K at 3 cm wavelength. The positions and intensities of the lines are explained by a crystalline field of cubic symmetry. The ground state is split with an over-all separation 8c--2d = 0.1755 plus or minus 0.0003 cm/sup -1/, c =219.9 plus or minus 0.3 x 10/sup -4/ cm/sup -1/, d = 1.0 plus or minus 0.3 x 10/sup -4/ cm/sup -1/, g = 1.9913 plus or minus 0.0005 at 290 deg K and 8c--2d = 0.1796 plus or minus 0.0008 cm/sup -1/, c = 225.0 plus or minus 0.8 x 10/sup -4/ cm/sup -1/, d= 1.7 plus or minus 0.8 x 10/sup -4/ cm/sup -1/, g= 1.991 P 0.001 at T = 90 deg K. Transitions corresponding to DELTA M = plus or minus 3, DELTA M = plus or minus 4, DELTA M = plus or minus 5 were observed. The narrow line width of less than 1 G permits the detection of the hyperfine structure of the two isotopes 155 and 157. The ratio of the magnetic moments is mu /sub 1//sup 155// mu /sub 1/sup 157/= 0.744 plus or minus 0.007 and the spectra are consistent with nuchear spins of 3/2 for both isotopes. It is suggested that there are oxygen vacancies distributed at random throughout the crystal. (auth)
