D$sub 2$O EFFECT ON $delta$H+$sup +$ AND $delta$S+$sup +$ IN THE IRONII- IRONIII ELECTRON-EXCHANGE REACTION

The equilibrium constant of the reaction Fe/sup 3+/ + D/sub 2/O- yields FeOD/sup 2+/ + D/sup +/ was measured at 0.500 ionic strength at 5, 15, and 25 deg C. The DELTA H and DELTA S of this reaction are 9.32 plus or minus 0.56 kcal mole/sup -1/ and 17.7 plus or minus 2.0 cal deg/sup -1/ mole/sup -1/, respectively. The rates of the electron-exchange reactions Fe/sup 2+/ + *Fe/sup 3+/ -- Fe/sup 2+/ + *Fe/sup 2+/ and Fe/sup 2+/ + *FeOD/sup 2+/ yields FeOD/sup 2+/ + *Fe/sup 2+/ were measured at 0.500 ionic strength at 5, 15, and 25 deg C. The enthalpy and entropy of the latter reaction are 11.5 plus or minus 0.5 kcal mole/sup -1/ and --4.0 plus or minus 1.8 cal deg/sup -1/ mole/sup -1/, respectively. (auth)
