The pressure vessel described comprises a body part and a closure member joined together by means of bolts. A pair of rings is disposed between the two parts of the vessel so that as the bolts are tightened the rings are tightened one against the other to provide a good seal. The facing surfaces of the rings are grooved so as to define a toroidal chamber in which is disposed a flexible toroidal membrane the inside of which is in communication with the inside of the pressure vessel. On stretching of the bolts by pressure in the vessel, the rings are forced away from each other into intimate sealing contact with the two parts of the vessel while the membrane seals off the gap between the rings. Gaskets of soft metal may be arranged between two parts of the pressure vessel and the rings in order to achieve a good seal. (A.G.W.)
