NUCLEON COMPTON SCATTERING. II. COMPARISON WITH EXPERIMENTAL DATA

Journal Article · · Annals of Physics (New York) (U.S.)

The proton Compton scattering cross section resulting from a numerical evaluation of nucleon Compton scattering dispersion relations is compared with experimental data at 90 and 135 deg center of mass from 0to 300-Mev incident photon energy. Below 240 Mev the cross section at 90 deg is best approximated by the dispersion-theoretic amplitude that omits the contribution from the 2- pi intermediate state in Channel III, while the cross section at 135 deg is best approximated by the amplitude that includes this contribution. Above 240 Mev the approximations made in the absorptive part in Channel I result in a rapid deterioration of the predictions. The effect of the contribution from the heretofore neglected 2- pi intermediate state in Channel III is considered and is used to dispute the validity of previous predictions of the neutral pion lifetime based upon proton Compton scattering dispersion relations.
