Fixed-t dispersion relations of the finite-energy sum-rule type are proposed for the ..gamma..p scattering amplitudes. The asymptotic contributions which occur are estimated quite accurately by the use of approximate conservation of the s-channel helicity in Compton scattering. The free parameter of the theory: the difference between the electric (..cap alpha..) and magnetic (..beta..) polarizabilities of the proton: is determined from a fit to the experimental data and is found to have the value ..cap alpha..-..beta.. = (5--16) x 10/sup -43/ cm/sup 3/. The calculated values of the cross sections and of the asymmetry of ..gamma..p scattering at energies up to 400 MeV are in satisfactory agreement with experiment. The generally accepted sign of the ..pi../sup 0/..-->..2..gamma.. decay constant is preferred in this approach.
