Elastic scattering of. gamma. rays by protons at energy. nu. < or =400 MeV

An analysis of elastic ..gamma..p scattering in the energy region ..nu..< or =400 MeV is carried out on the basis of new dispersion relations for fixed t. The theoretical predictions agreee with the experimental data over the entire energy range considered except energies near the ..delta.. (1236) resonance for an angle theta=90/sup 0/. It is shown that in extraction of the proton polarizability coefficients (alpha-bar and beta-bar) from the existing experimental data on ..gamma..p scattering it is important to take into account the contribution to the expansion of the cross section in ..nu.. of terms with ..nu../sup n/ (n> or =4). Inclusion of these terms leads to values of alpha-bar and beta-bar differing substantially from those found previously.
