REACTIONS OF Ti, Zr, AND W BORIDES WITH THEIR CARBIDES (in Ukrainian)
Metallographic, x-ray diffraction, and microhardness analyses of TiB-- TiC, TiB/sub 2/-TiC, ZrB--ZrC, ZrC/sub 2/-- ZrC, and W/sub 2/B/sub 2/ show continuous solid solution series of TiB-TiC and ZrB--ZrC. In the TiB/sub 2/- -TiC system observations revealed TiB/sub 2/ and TiC diffusion (up to 20 mole%) and ion diffusion of TiC and TiB/sub 2/. in ZrB/sub 2/--ZrC and W/sub 2/B/sub 5/-- WC, diffusion is practically absent. It is also shown that ternary compounds of Ti/sub 2/B/sub 2/C, W/sub 2/B/sub 2/C, etc., do not form in the examined systems. The microhardness of TiB and ZrB is 2700 to 2800 and 3500 to 3600 kg/mm/sup 2/, respectively. Pure W/sub 2/B/sub 5/ and W/sub 2/B/sub 5/ with 10 mole% WC showed the highest resistance to oxidation.
