Intermediate oxidation products of Nb and NbC were andalyzed using powdered and 3mm specimens of Nb, NbO, NbO/sub 2/, NbC/sub 0.8/, and Nb/sub 2/C heated for 3 hrs at 300 deg C. X-ray pictures taken of NbO/sub 2/ NbO, and NbC/ sub 0.80/ oxidation exhibited sharp lines for the respective phases, while Nb/sub 2/C showed split, washed out lines with 101, 110, 112 indices. Spectral compositions of Nb/sub 2/ C/sub approximates 0.4/ are practically identical. The Nb/sub 2/C structure is also identical to the U/sub 2/C structure with elementary nucleus a = 5.00/sub 4/ kX, b = 4.57 kX, and c = 2.89/sub 7/ kX. (R.V.J.)
