The application of secondary electron multipliers can be divided into two groups: photometric and scintillationcounting measurements. Theoretical considerations of the fundamental properties of secondary electron multipliers and practical constructions are discussed. The relation between the signal-noise ratio and energetic as well as time resolution is explained. The demands of scintillation techniques and photometry influence each other or are identical. The considerations are proved by experiments made with M 12 FS type multipliers; the inter dinode voltage has the expected influence on the signal-to-noise ratio and resolution. The relation between the signal-to-noise ratio and signal amplitude as well as the relative amplitude fluctuation and pulse-amplitude is discussed. Problems of short-time measurements are discussed in connection with signal-to-noise ratio. Measurements made with the recently developed K 12 FS 50 multiplier are described. The local sensitivity distribution of the photocathode, its measurement and its importance for the usage is dealt with. Measurement data show that in the case of the venetianblind multiplier the focusing conditions must not be neglected. The higher noise and higher supply- voltage of the venetian-blind multipliers compared with that of the focused type of multipliers is theoretically and experimentally explained. Data gained with venetian-blind types and focused multipliers, M 12 FS 35 and M 12 FS 150, are compared. Ranges of phototubes and multipliers are demonstrated, as well as their fields of application and directions for running them. (auth)
