THE REMOVAL OF Sr$sup 85$ AND Ca$sup 45$ FROM BONE IN VITRO

Journal Article · · Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics (U.S.)
Defatted bone powder, anorganic bone, ashed bone, and apatite which had taken up Ca/sup 45/ and Sr/sup 85/ under different conditions were subjected to wash solutions after standing for different lengths of time or after being subjected to heat treatment. A number of factors affected the ratio of Ca/sup 45/ removed to Sr/sup 85/ removed, but under a given set of conditions a change in the ratio could be used as a criterion of recrystallization. The decrease in amounts removable after different periods of standing could be ascribed primarily to processes occurring in the organic matter of bone, and to a lesser extent in the hydration layer and on the crystal surface. There was no evidence of genuine recrystallization at room temperature. (auth)
