DETERMINATION OF HAFNIUM IN ZIRCONIUM BY MEANS OF SOLVENT EXTRACTION WITH CYCLOHEXANONE (in Japanese)

The separation method using cyclohexanone was successfully applied to the determination of small or trace amount of hafnium in zirconium. When an aqueous solution of zirconium sample containing ammonium thiocyanate, ammonium sulfate, and hydrochloric acid was contacted with cyclohexanone by shaking, hafnium in zirconium was preferentially extracted into cyclohexanone. The organic phase was back-washed repeatedly with aqueous solution containing ammonium thiocyanate, ammonium sulfate, and hydrochloric acid and finally hafnium in the organic phase was perfectly purified. Then, hafnium back-extracted into 4N sulfuric acid solution was either titrated with EOTA or estimated by the spectrophotometry with morin. On the other hand, the yield of hafnium in the organic phase was measured either radiochemically with a tracer of hafnium181 which was added previously into the sample or by the analysis of the extraction curves. From these results, the content of hafnium in the zirconium sample was calculated. The method is superior to other methods in respect to easiness of procedure and higher sensibility in case of determination of hafnium in the so- called nuclear reactor grade zirconium. (P.C.H.)
