Cyclohexanone was found to be a very excellent extraction solvent for the mutual separation of zircorium and hafnium. The distribution ratio (D: the ratio of the concentration of zirconium or hafnium in orgaric phase to that in aqueous phase) and the separation factor (the ratio of D/sub Hf//D/sub Zr/) in this extraction were measured chiefly at 30 deg C. Results: Cy clohexanone as an extraction solvent is superior to methyl isobutyl ketone or diethyl ether in the following points: (1) It has high values of separation factor (maximum, about 120) and high distribution ratio (approximately 10 times the value of methyl isobutyl ketone); (2) the influence of ammonium sulfate concentration in aqueous phase on the separation factor is comparatively small; (3) the separation factor increases at lower temperatures; and (4) thiocyanic acid dissolved in cyclohexanone is relatively stable.
