A safety device for the control of gas-cooled reactors is described. The neutron-absorbing control rods are lowered vertically into passages between the fuel channels by a suitable transmission mechanism automatically in response to an abnormal condition in the reactor pressure vessel. The device operates independently of the normal electrical safety circuits in the reactor control system by means of release mechandism on the clutch of the lowering transmission. (R.E.U.)
