NUCLEAR REACTOR SHUTDOWN APPARATUS
Apparatus is described for rapidly shutting down a nuclear reactor in the event of failure of normal shutdown means. A reservoir containing neutron absorbent material in a form having fluid properties is located above the reactor core. Ducting leads from the reservoir and extends within the core in such a manner that the neutron-absorbent material may pass into the core on receipt of an operating signal. Means for removing the material from the core are also provided. The neutron-absorbent material may be in the form of pellets or small particles. The pellets are preferably balls about 3/8" in diameter made of stainless steel containing boron. Alternatively, the balls may be made of glass containing boron or may be in the form of sand. The ducting may comprise an upper tube and a lower tube adapted to fit within the upper tube, with means for lowering the lower tube from within the upper tube so that it extends within the core of the reactor.
