SHUT-DOWN DEVICE FOR NUCLEAR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4792143
A shut-down device comprises at least one vertical tubular conduit passing through the reactor core and provided with appropriate shutting means in the proximity of respectively its upper and lower extremity. Before reactor shut- down, in the top portion of the tube above the upper shutting means, balls are situated enclosing neutron absorbing materials. The portion of the tube situated between the lower shutting means and the lower extremity of the reactor core region is filled with balls constituted by a moderating material. For the reactor shut-down, the upper shutting means is opened, so that the neutron- absorbing balls fall irto the reactor core region of the tube. For restarting the reactor, the lower shutting means is opened and the balls are gradually discharged from the reactor, preferably by a wheel provided with cells at its periphery so that each cell may always receive only one ball from the lower extremity of the tube, (NPO)
