IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO THE SHUTTING DOWN OF NUCLEAR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4827892
A shut-down device for gas-cooled reactors is designed with neutron- absorbing balls which are discharged into the core upon demagnetization of a valve. A sleeve is provided in the operative tube in the core so that, on discharge, the balls will fill the annular space between the tube and sleeve and hence fewer balls and less time are required to fill the tube. The tube can be withdrawn from the core for recovering the balls. (D.L.C.)
