STUDY OF NUCLEAR ENERGY LEVELS. Final Technical Report

BS>An examination of angular distributions and excitation functions for F/sup 19/(d, alpha )O/sup 17/ reactions to several O/sup 17/ states indicates that the reactions are determined mainly by the properties of the initial and final states. A preliminary analysis showed that the large difference between measured distributions for Be/sup 9/(d, alpha )Li/sup 7/ reactions to two nearly identical Li/sup 7/ levels could be interpreted in terms of a surface interaction model. Additionally, the spectrum of alpha particles emitted in fast neutron reactions with CsI(Tl) was obtained by using a CsI(Tl) crystal as both target and detector. The results indicate that direct and compound nuclear processes, as well as intermediate processes, contribute to these reactions. The cross section obtained for the CsI(n, alpha ) reaction was the sum of the Cs/sup 133/ and I/sup 127/ cross sections. A technique for observing charged particle energy spectra in neutron reactions with Al/sup 27/, using targets of about 2 mg/cm/sup 2/ thickness was studied; and the cross section for the Al/sup 27/(n,p)Mg/sup 27/ reaction at 12.4 to 17.8 Mev was measured. The resulting excitation curve was fitted satisfactorily with the statistical compound nuclear model. (D.C.W.)
