New method of velocity measurement for flowing plasmas by means of Doppler shift

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4146048
A method of velocity measurement for a flowing plasma is proposed for a range of 1000 to 2000 m/s. The Doppler shift of spectral lines can be measured by position diodes of semiconducting material. Light input signal for the diode must lie over the noise level, therefore, an image intensifier tube must be used for the light amplification of the spectral line. Calculation of the absolute light intensity for the plasma flow shows that the use of an image intensifier is necessary. The method described here for measuring velocities has a better accuracy than the other methods by which the very small Doppler shift on photographic plates is measured directly. (auth)
