AIRBORNE CERIUM-141 AND CERIUM-144 AT BOMBAY DURING NOVEMBER 1961-FEBRUARY 1963

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4145962
Chemical separation of cerium from airborne fallout samples was carried out to determine cerium-141 and cerium-144 activities in air. The levels of cerium-141 and cerium-144 activities for the monthly air-filter samples collected at Bombay during the period November 1961 to February 1963 were measured and the ratios Ce-141/ Ce-144 were calculated. Higher levels of cerium-141 were observed in June 1962 and during October 1962 to February 1963, while high cerium-144 levels were observed from December 1961 to April 1962 and during January and February 1963. A sharp increase in the ratio of cerium141 to cerium-144 was observed in June, August, October, and December 1962 indicating the arrival of fresh radioactive debris in the atmosphere from the tests carried out during 1962. This report gives the method of sampling, chemical procedures and the data on the levels of cerium141 and cerium-144 in the ground level air. (auth)
